Post 4 - Preference Questioning: Which Letter?

One part we read today included a delicious sampling of letters in the Marketplace.

Choose one of the options, write a convincing/persuasive piece, and submit it on the blog. Respond to two other students posts in a meaningful way. Feel free to pose questions. Use your creativity. Don't be afraid to use your school appropriate humor. :) This story uses plays on words frequently, so don't shy away from practicing fun with language. THE POSSIBILITIES ARE ENDLESS!

1. Choose a letter and describe what a day is like for it. Include interesting events.
2. Choose a letter and describe its feelings and concerns in a poem.
3. If you were a letter, which letter would you be and why?
4. Write a dialouge/script between two or more letters. Think about what they would discuss or argue.

  1. My answer to question three: If I were to be a letter I would be the exciting capital cursive E. I would be this elegant letter because cursive is hard and clompicated. People argue when they are told to write in cursive. I love to argue and win the arguement. If I was a cursive E people could climb up my right side and slide down the bumpy left side. I also could use myself as a extravagent curly straw. I would also be used in many words and I would be one of five and a half vowels. That is why I would want to be the letter E.

  2. If I could be any letter of the alphabet I would be the letter A. Not just because it's my last name, because of everything I could do. I could simply be considered AWESOME or I could be an architect. I could also be an animal like an anteater or an alligator! Or maybe if I wanted to explore other galaxies and be an alien. Another thing is that like Emily said, somebody could climb up the middle of me like a ladder and have a wonderful time sliding down my sides. Not to mention it is a vowel. So now you understand that the letter A is quite an AMAZING letter.

  3. If I were a letter, I would want to be a normal capital D. Someone could climb up the straight side and slide down the curve yelling wee! That sounds like so much fun to me. Another reason I would want to be a D is because I would be a great writer. How does a D connect to writing, you ask? Well, great writers have some qualities like being DETAILED and DESCRIPTIVE. I would also be a great DANCER. I would also be DELIGHTFUL, DECREATIVE, and DILIGENT. I would also have the chance to see how life is for some amazing, extraordinary animals! I could also be a Dafidil or a Daisy. D is the first letter in my name, which makes it even more delightful to me. I would not want to be a cursive D, because I don't want to be cursed. Another one of my favorite letters would be best friend with the D, and it makes sense why. An A would almost always be before a D, so they would see a lot of each other. As you see, D is a delightful letter.

  4. If I was a letter I would be S. One reason I would be S is because it is sweet and sour and sweet and sour are the best candy combinations in candy in my opinion. Maybe if I was sweet and sour all the other girl letters might be attacted to me(Hah Hah). Another reason I would be S is because alot of people use S in most words everyday at least one million times. PLus S is a superb letter.

  5. If I were a letter I would be a X. I would be a X because X is my favorite letter to write, I am always X's when I play Tic-Tac-Toe, and X is a roman numeral that stands for ten and ten just happens to be my favorite number!, plus no one would be able to play xylophone or take a x-ray on broken bones. X is a x-stremlly cool letter

    My name is "A",
and I've had a great day,
    people have been liking me,
    except for the idiotic bee,
    although some people dislike me,
they never have to pay a fee,
    to use the letter "A",
(except in the month of May),
    I would consider myself cool,
just like coming out of a pool,
    my favorite word is awesome,
    and I hate the opossum,
I think the world is full of glee,
and I believe that's because of me,
without me, words wouldn't make sense,
just like a human tied to a fence,
there's no doubt that I'm the best,
and that's for sure in the South West!

  7. Emily- I like your word choice (i.e. elegant, complicated, and extravagant). What other words could you add to this description? The first word that came to my mind was contorted. :) It is easy for me to "see" what you are describing in my mind when I read your description. Well done!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Ben-Great voice in this piece! It flows well and is easily read aloud. Bravo. I like how you piggy backed and built off what Emily said. That show comprehension and application of others' ideas. Well done. What do you think the letter A would say to Z?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Dani-Your piece made me smile the whole time. :) Nice job choosing words that started with your letter and were meaningful to you. That gives everyone more insight to the beautiful and unique you. I like the play on words you did with "cursed" and "cursive." That never occurred to me. Haha! If D kept its same shape, how many things could be it turned into?....e.g. like if it was turned on its side it could be a boat.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Randy-Your answer fits your witty personality. And is would be so popular because it makes all word plural. You entry makes me hungry because I think of sweet and sour pork or of a yummy sauce to dip my egg rolls in!!! Yum!

    ReplyDelete
  11. "Cruse"-The letter X was a bold choice because it is uncommon in comparison to other letters. Great job being a risk-taker!. I am ALWAYS the Xs too when I play Tic-Tac-Toe too. I like how you connected your answer to mathematics. I never thought of that! Here's a question...what can you build with Xs? Is that a needed shape not only in the alphabet or in other areas as well? Hmmm.....

  12. Dear Letter A (a.k.a. Haley Maurice),

What a lovely poem! I can see the parts of the book in your writing..."idiotic bee." Great touch. I like how you are paying with rhyming words and reading comprehension. That is no easy feat. I think we could make a flow map that is just one big poem from chapter to chapter. I love how you're giving me ideas. :) Thank you. I think it s clever how to say tat words won't make sense without you....that is so true because you're a vowel! Well done. How do you think Emily's cursive E would feel about your poem (not Emily...her letter because you are both vowels)?

    ReplyDelete
  13. If I got to choose a letter I would choose to be the letter A. I would choose this letter because I would taste the best. I also would choose this letter beacuse I would be the most popular and most commonly used. A is one of the most commonly used letters in the alphabet so without the letter A the world would not be the same. Also apples are one of my favorite foods and the word apple starts with the letter A. Also i would let the other letters slide doen my curvy sides. I think the letter A is the best letter!!!!

  14. I would choose the letter o. The reason I would choose the letter o is because when people gasp they kinda make an o shape with their mouth. Another reason is because you could climb in the letter or stay in the outside and just slide down it. In that case people would probably make an o shape with their mouth. The last reason being is that it looks just like a circle and I like math a lot! O is the most awesome letter ever. Although I would liked to be shaped like an o.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I would be the letter o mainly because it's mt favorite letter and cicles are my favorite shape I'l post later...

  16. Haley's A,
Even though you may be the leader of the Alphabet and be the first letter, it does not matter. With all respect I am the fairest letter of them all. I am an elegant vowel who keeps people fit by helping them exercise and well fed by letting them eat. You may be amazing but I am eggheaded, effectionate, exquisite, and exciting. You also give some of us aches from leading our alphabet line down alleys. Maybe a vote might decide.
    Sincerely,
    Elegant E

  17. (continuing last post)
As I said last post, I would mainly be o because I lke circles and o is my favorite letter. I would also be o because o is commonly use in the English language and other languages. Many things in the world are also shaped like o's, such as the Moon, Oreos, CDs, balls, etc. O's would taste good in the Word Market because it's commonly used.
    Sincerly,

  18. Trent-Food for Thought: Why does the letter A taste the best? What desriptive words describe taste that go along with A? The letter A reminds me of my sister because her name is Alison. Good choice. :)

    ReplyDelete
  19. Cade-I never thought about when I gasp how it makes a letter "O" shape. Very creative answer. O seems to be a very useful and practical shape. What do we need Os for?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Elegant E-Your entry has such personality! I can't wait to read Haley's response. Nice job keeping it text based and not personal. That is hard to do. The exercise and eating lines made me crack up. I just read it to my mom. Well done. We shall see what happens from here. Dun....dun...dun... (or is it done...done...done)?

    ReplyDelete
  21. The Monkey-Food for Thought: Why would you be an O when monkeys eat bananas, which are shaped more like Cs?

I like how you listed popular items that are in the shape of Os. What else can you think of?

    ReplyDelete
  22. If I were a letter I would be an italic (capital) I. Slightly slanted and of course capital! With out me you couldn't even say "I'. or in, it, list, ignorant, or anything with "I'. I would be italic because it is a fancy way of writing. Also, it looks cool and Italic is originated from Italy and a guy in New York (Augustus Jackson) invented Ice cream and he was from Italy! (fun fact)! I would also be I because it would taste Icy and sorta like Ice cream! Mostly, because I is one of the 5 Vowel's!

    ReplyDelete
  23. If I could be any letter of the Alphabet I would be the letter Z because it is used very little and I like the shape. Also I would have a much higher chance of not being eaten. If people suddenlly used Z then it would be a different story. But so far Z isn't used very often. Plus it is the sound bees make and bees make honey and I LIKE HONEY.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Ben what about all the bad things you would be like you would be akward and tiny as an ant but also big like an albotross. You could also be an allosaurus and tell sientists about dinosaurs

    ReplyDelete
  25. Hannah-"I" like how you chose the letter I. I didn't think about how important the letter I is to people in general. Well said. :) If I was gone, would people always say me? That certainly change the English language.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Beau-I like honey too. Who eats the other letters? What else can you think of to add to your thoughts?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Miss Bailin- Yes I think they would. Also without "I" no one could even say "Miss Bailin"!!!! Scary!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I would still be o because monkeys go "Ooo! Ooo!" when they screech. They also have o shaped mouths when monkeys screech.
    Sincerely,
    The Monkey :(|)

There is also another connection in math when we use math problems like 1,204 + 1,234= X (X=2,438)

  30. I think That the letter A would ask Z why so little words start with him. I think since A is such an awesome letter he would lend Z some words. a would also ask Z what his favorite word was. That's what I think A would say to Z.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Miss Balin-

A is used way more than E. A is the leader, and leaders are the awesomest, friendliest, kindest, strongest, fastest, helpfulest, toughest, and so on. I don't undstand why Miss Elagant Cursive E would think she's better than me. I don't think she's elagant at all!

You aren't elegant at all. I would never lead us down dark alleys, and if I did, I could defend us. That's because I'm the awesomest, friendliest, kindest, strongest, fastest, helpfulest, and toughest letter of all of us. If I did, everyone would just fall in love with me. I don't understand you. You are just babbaling about me because your so jealous and you think I'm the best. I'll defend everyone at all costs. No matter what it means. If you can up in front I'm sure you take wrong turns, and nobody would admire you because you aren't awesome, friendly, kind, strong, fast, helpful, and tough at all. Sorry for my rudeness, but your jealous, I can read your mind.

  34. Well you only lead three letters. The rest of them follow me. I am also not the one who's jealous. By all means respect 'awesome' 'leader' (there is a reaon for the little lines) I think it's up to the people to decide who is the fairest letter. Anyways the compitition is between you, me and twenty-four other letters. It may be possible that you nor me are the best, elegant, awesome letter out there. But I'm just saying. It's pretty abvious who is the fairest letter of them all. We may even need Ryhme and Reason to settle this problem. Though they may not be any help for you.

  35. A vs L

A- I am more awesome than you.
L- No. I am more lovely.
A- Well, I taste better than you.
    L- No you don't.
A- Yes I do. I will prove it. I taste like apples, ants, and applesuace.
L- Well, you also taste like antinymns. Yuck! I taste like lemons.

I think this would be an argument/conversation that L and A would have.

Why would you want to get into all of this? Anyways you are so far down the alphabet it is almost like you aren't even there.
    Haley's A,
You may think all the letters follow you but they also follow me. Only three of them follow you and then the rest stop to follow me. There is a break in the alphabet after D. I don't get why you don't understand. Maybe it's because all the fame and glory that the three letters give you (even though it does compare to as much I get) gotten to your pionted head. Therapy could probably help that. Just go and ask T. He will talk some sense into you.

  44. But E, YOU are going to cut off at H because then all the other letters follow ME (and I)! I get most letter in the alphapet following me. Sure, U gets some letters following him, but only 5. A has three following (like you said), but you get only get tree letters, too. I has 5 like U, O has 5 as well! I, O, and U are the LEADING VOWELS OF THE ALPHABET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(A and I are fighting a losing war)

  46. Ozzy O,
You do have a good piont. How about you, A, I, U and me all share our part of the alphabet. But to make it fair so we don't fight over the rules, us vowels and the letters behind us follow the rules that the vowel in front of them gives them. The consenents could also have part of this. We could have are own city, state, nation. But they would all be connected in some sort of way. We shall name our states at once. And the consinents that follow us can have their own city. My state shall be called The State of Excellency and my capital shall be called E's Utopia.

  56. I hate to break this to everyone, but it appears that E is the most powerful here. E is the most used letter in the English alphabet (but O is better). But don't let it get to your flat head, because E isn't an abreviation for any elements in the peroidic table (O is very important, because it's oxygen). If I had to join ANY of you vowels, I would pick U because U is half an O. Plus O is the start of the name "Ozzy Osbourne". And if I was a black hole I'd suck E and A in and then go into retirement into my solid gold mansion, next to my melted gold lake. Besides, the monkeys like O because when they screich, they have O shaped mouths! Doughnuts are O's! plus babys can't RESIST O's when they make there cute widdle fayses (widdle fayses is NOT spelled wrong!).
