Post 13 - What if the Mathemagician stole a letter from Dictionopolis? Which one would he take and why?

Please creatively answer the question and support your response. One type of support must be from The Phantom Tollbooth and the other(s) can be from an outside idea.

  1. If the Mathamagician stole a letter from Dictionopolis things would go bad for Digitopolis, but not quite as quite as bad for Dictionopolis. King Azaz would prove that words are more important than numbers, at least King Azaz would think that the Mathamagician thought that. All citizens of Digitopolis would hate the Mathamagician. They would probably get a new Mathamagician for Digitopolis. The Mathamagicion would be put in jail.

I think he would take A, because Ais AWESOME. A is Amazing, one of A kind, fAbulous, fAntastic, And Athletic. But those are just a few ways to describe A. A is probably the most common letter used in the alphabet. He would also take this letter because it could tell him all the secrets about the alphabet, and that's because it's the leader. Next, he would take it because it is the first letter, so it would be in the front, which would be the easyest to get.

  2. I COMPLETELY agree with Haley about the Mathemagician proving to Azaz that letters are better than numbers, but I think it's weird that Haley would chose a JUST because she chose A for her favorite letter in one of the older posts.
I would think that think that the Mathemagician would either chose O (not just because it's totally awesome) and S. I think he would steal these letters because 8 is made by making an S and then a diagnal through the S. It would also make infinity if you turn the S on it's side and then did the same steps I just posted. O would be stolen because O can also be turned into 8 and infinity if you just put the two O's side by side (oo and 8).

  3. DeAr HAley,

I KNEW YOU WERE GOING TO PICK A!!!! Picking it because it is the FIRST letter!!! Haha! Is A an important part in math? What would he need A for?

  4. I wonder who else thinks letters are better than numbers......let's vote! Look for the next blog entry to be a vote.

  5. Dear Devon,

Good observation about the previous posts. :) Interesting choices. I can see 0 because it is a letter and a number. I also see how it could be s because that connects well the making numbers. What other letters can be transformed into numbers? Would he take the letter A and make a totally new number? WHat would it be called? Devon....I think you made me think of our next blog question. Thanks! :)

  6. m and w can be turned on it's side to make three.
a capital I is almost like a 1 and a capital B is almost like an 8. 2s look sort of like a backwards S. if you turn a 4 upside-down it would make a lowercase h. 5s look like an S and P can also be turned into a 9 or an upside-down backwards 6. A lowercase b can be turned into a backwards 9 or an upside-down, backwards 9. a lowercase q looks almost like a 9 or an upside-down 6. 7 looks like an upside-down, slightely slanted upercase L. O looks like 0's! Infinity looks like two lowercase o's (oo).

  7. Dear Ozzy,

Wow! You are doing phenomenal job manipulating letters and numbers. I am so excited to add a gadget. Thanks for investigating the site and teaching me something new. I appreciate how you help me become a student as well as a teacher. I wonder if we could make a letter/number code using your ideas. :)

  8. He'd simply take the first one he would find. He hates Dictionopolis. He probably wouldn't be there for long.

  9. I think he would also be interested in x because it can be a symbol of multiplication. MISS BAILIN HE COULD STEAL ANY LETTER TO USE AS A VARIABLE IN A MATH PROBLEM, INCLUDING A!

  10. Miss Bailin,

A could be a vairable. It also starts words that involve math. E.g. Addend, add

  11. I think he would steel A and Z. He would steel these because he could act like it was King AzAz. also if he took A and Z he would have the whole alelfabet.

  12. I think he would steal M. I think this because there is M for math. Also if he turned it to the side he would have an E. Then he could do problems w/ the exponent as 3.

  13. Sorry I said that wrong. If he had an M he could flip it to the side and have E for equation or exponent. He would also have another 3 if he flipped it again.
